Vitiligo awareness

The North American congressman, Hank Johnson, recently promoted the declaration of the National Vitiligo Awareness Day.

In his reasoning, he highlighted that, with this government bill, they wanted to “honour the brave children and adults that whilst living with this condition, often overcome many different kinds of bullying and their own personal problems to fight and contribute to our society”.

The American Dermatology Academy refers to vitiligo as a life-altering disorder that can lead to low self-esteem, anxiety and depression. This is particularly frequent in the diagnosis of children.

Different North American organisations for vitiligo sufferers, such as the American Vitiligo Research Foundation and Vitiligo Bond, have applauded this initiative, which they feel will help restore the dignity to vitiligo sufferers so they can have a better quality of life, whilst also helping to educate the public and overcome the social stigma of those suffering from vitiligo.

If it succeeds, the National Vitiligo Awareness Day will be added to the World Vitiligo Day, which is held every 25th June.

The V-Strong Vitiligo Support Group was chosen to host of the main event of the United States World Vitiligo Day 2017. This year’s theme is: Step Up for Vitiligo: A call for truth, hope and change!
